Coming at you from Chennai

Just had my first Indian train experience and arrived in Chennai at around 6am local time. I’m pretty tired so I trust you’ll excuse any glaring errors.

Since my last post I’ve been to Nepal for a long weekend in Kathmandu, returned to Delhi for a day, made my way south to Hyderabad to stay at the OM Base and now I’m in the midst of my journey south through Tamil Nadu to Madurai.

Kathmandu was great fun hanging out with David, Niel his trusty Honda Splendour and a few of his friends from various parts of the world. We took in some of the sites in Kathmandu valley ranging from a monkey ridden Buddhist Temple to the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu’s tourist district. One of the more unusual experiences was watching the new Harry Potter movie in a cinema which kept losing power. Every so often the sound would warble, the screen would go black and eventually the generator would kick in to save the day. Modern multiplex it was not!

Delhi was just a stopover to wait for a plane to Hyderabad. Got a book or two and hung out in a coffee shop with a Danish guy I met at breakfast.

After arriving in Hyderabad I took a 2 hour taxi to get to OM’s Base which is its national headquarters for India. Binu, the man and the legend, sorted me out with some accomodation and a quick orientation. The next morning I joined up with a team of American’s from Nebraska to visit one of the schools nearby. It was incredible. Over 550 pupils were receiving an education which they would otherwise not be able to afford - perhaps more on this later.

Saturday consisted of a trip around Hyderabad city with some Indians who had been working on a new school. Cure awkward moments at the start of the day which were eventually broken down through the medium of photography. Golconda Fort and the Charminar were on the itinerary.

The next few days were chilled until it was time to leave for the train. It’s strange getting a train in India when there are no other westerners around as it feels like the entire station is watching you, probably because they are. When it came I found my bunk and holed up for the duration of the trip, guarding my possessions like a man possessed. Sleep came eventually, trains over here are noisey don’t you know.

Finished Obama’s “The Audacity of Hope” on the train last night - absolute stormer of a book, really enjoyed it.

There we have it, a quick update. This week I will mostly be in the hospitals checking out the wireless system so I may have time free in the evenings to write something a little more in depth about what I’ve seen so far. Could be terribley boring.
